If you have an established lawn in Accra, there is a very good chance it is carpet grass — Axonopus compressus. It is the natural, hard-wearing standard for lawns across Ghana and much of West Africa, and it is what most settled lawns here actually are, whether the owner knows the name or not.
There is a lot of confusing advice online about lawn grasses, much of it written for American or South African gardens — Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine. Those are real grasses, but they are not the everyday reality of a Ghana lawn. For honest, local advice, the answer is simpler: in Ghana, the natural lawn is carpet grass, and the main alternative is artificial turf.
Why Carpet Grass Suits Ghana
It Loves the Heat
Carpet grass thrives in tropical warmth and the kind of soils we have in Ghana. It is built for this climate, not coaxed into surviving it.
It Tolerates Shade Better Than Most
One of carpet grass’s real strengths is that it performs in partial shade — a genuine advantage on the many Accra plots that have mango, almond, or other shade trees. Many turfgrasses sulk under trees; carpet grass copes.
It Takes Foot Traffic
Children, dogs, gatherings — a family lawn gets walked on. Carpet grass is hard-wearing and recovers, which is part of why it became the standard here.
It Spreads and Knits
Left healthy, it forms a dense, even mat that crowds out many weeds on its own. A thick carpet-grass lawn is its own best defence against bare patches.
The Honest Limitation: The Dry Season
Carpet grass is tough, but it is not magic. It wants roughly an inch of water a week, and without irrigation it browns in the dry season and the Harmattan. That is normal — it is going dormant, not dying, and it greens back up when the rains return. If you want it green year-round, that means watering or irrigation through the dry months. Carpet Grass vs Artificial Turf
Artificial grass is genuinely available in Ghana and some owners choose it, especially where watering is hard. It stays green with no mowing and no water. But it is a different thing — a surface, not a living lawn — and it gets hot in full sun and needs its own kind of cleaning.
