Common Lawn Problems: Pests, Bare Patches and Yellowing
Your Lawn Is Telling You Something
A struggling lawn is rarely a mystery. Bare patches, yellow spots, thin areas, a lawn that just looks tired — each one usually points to a plain cause. The trick is reading it right, because the fix for a dog-worn patch is nothing like the fix for waterlogging, and guessing wastes time and money. Here are the common problems we see on Accra lawns and what is usually behind them.
Bare Patches
The most common complaint, and usually the easiest to read.
Foot Traffic and Dog Runs
A path worn across the lawn, or a strip where the dog patrols, simply gets walked to death. The grass cannot recover under constant traffic. The fix is to relay carpet grass and, where possible, redirect the traffic — sometimes a stepping path solves it for good.
Dry-Season Damage
Patches that browned and thinned in the dry season may not fully recover on their own. Relaying carpet grass into the bare spots before weeds claim them restores an even lawn.
Something Spilled
Fuel, strong chemicals, or even a pile of cuttings left to rot can kill a patch. These need clearing and relaying.
Yellowing and Thin Areas
Underfeeding
A hungry lawn goes pale and thin. Often a yellowing lawn just needs feeding to come back green and dense.
Waterlogging
Yellow patches in low spots after heavy rain are usually drowned roots — a drainage or levelling issue, not a feeding one. Watering more makes it worse.
Scalping
A lawn cut too short goes yellow and stressed, and stays that way until it recovers. Right mowing height fixes it going forward.
Pests and the Honest Approach
Sometimes a lawn problem really is a pest — grubs or insects damaging the roots or blades. Here we are careful and straight: in Ghana, any pesticide used on a lawn must be registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Environmental Protection Agency Act 1994 (Act 490), with plant-protection and import oversight by the PPRSD at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture under the Plants and Fertilizer Act 2010 (Act 803). When treatment is genuinely needed, we use EPA-registered products, applied responsibly and never over-sprayed — on a lawn your family and pets use.
But we look first. Many “pest” problems turn out to be drainage, scalping, or underfeeding wearing a pest’s disguise. We diagnose before we treat, so you are not spraying chemicals at a problem that needed water management instead.
