How to Lay a New Lawn in Ghana
When You Need a New Lawn, Not Just a Cut
Some plots do not need maintenance — they need a lawn in the first place. Bare red earth after a build, a yard that has gone to weeds, a worn-out patch the family wore down, or new ground that has never had grass. Laying a fresh lawn is a different job from regular upkeep, and getting the start right is what decides whether the lawn thrives for years or struggles from day one.
In Ghana, a new natural lawn means carpet grass (Axonopus compressus) — the hard-wearing standard that suits our climate, takes foot traffic, and tolerates the partial shade so many Accra plots have. It is laid as sod (turf), usually sourced from local nurseries.
What Laying a New Lawn Involves
1. Clearing and Levelling the Ground
The single most important step, and the one most often rushed. The ground is cleared of weeds, rubble, and debris, then levelled so water drains evenly and the lawn sits flat. A lawn laid on lumpy, weedy ground will always show it.
2. Preparing the Soil
Good topsoil, broken up so roots can get in, is what lets new grass establish quickly. Hard, compacted build-site soil is loosened and improved first. Skip this and the grass sits on top instead of rooting down.
3. Laying the Carpet Grass
The sod is laid in close, staggered rows with no gaps, pressed into firm contact with the soil so the roots take. Edges are trimmed to fit paths, beds, and borders cleanly.
4. Watering In
A new lawn needs consistent watering while it roots — this is the make-or-break period. Laid in the rains, nature helps; laid in the dry season, it needs committed watering or it will not establish. We are honest about timing: the rains are the kinder time to lay a new lawn.
5. First Cut and Settling In
The new lawn is left to root before its first gentle cut, then eased into a normal mowing rhythm. The first weeks set up years of healthy growth.
What a New Lawn Costs
Laying new grass is a separate one-off job from regular upkeep, indicatively around GH₵15 per square metre installed. That figure is a single-source indication — treat it as a starting point, not a fixed rate, because ground condition makes a real difference.
