How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn in Accra?
The Question Behind the Question
People ask how often to mow, but what they really want to know is two things: am I paying for visits the lawn does not need, and am I letting it get away from me? Both are real worries, and the honest answer depends on one thing above all — the season.
A Ghana lawn does not grow at one steady speed. In the rains it races; in the dry season it slows almost to a stop. Mowing on a fixed, year-round schedule means you either overpay half the year or let the lawn go coarse the other half. The right rhythm follows the grass.
In the Growing Season — Every One to Two Weeks
When the rains come, carpet grass (Axonopus compressus), the natural standard for Accra lawns, grows fast. Through the wet months a lawn usually needs mowing every one to two weeks to stay neat and healthy.
Why Not Less Often Than That
Cut too rarely and the grass grows tall, then you scalp it on the next cut, shocking the lawn and leaving it yellow and stressed. Tall grass also shades out the base, goes coarse, and lets weeds settle in. A regular cut at the right height keeps it dense and green.
Why Not Every Few Days
Carpet grass does not need cutting every few days. Mowing too short, too often weakens it. The one-to-two-week rhythm in the rains is the sweet spot for most Accra lawns.
In the Dry Season — Much Less
When the rains stop and the Harmattan dust comes, growth slows right down. The lawn needs far fewer cuts — sometimes only once a month or less. Without irrigation, carpet grass browns in the dry season; mowing a stressed, dormant lawn on a wet-season schedule just damages it. This is exactly when a fixed year-round contract wastes your money.
The Right Height Matters as Much as the Frequency
Frequency is only half the job. Cutting at the right height for the season — a little higher in the dry months to shade the soil and hold moisture, neater in the rains — does more for a lawn’s health than any extra visit. We adjust both.
Why a Seasonal Plan Beats a Fixed One
This is the whole reason our monthly plans flex with the season rather than charging the same every month for the same number of visits. You get:
- More frequent cuts when the grass is racing in the rains
- Fewer cuts when it slows in the dry season
- The right cutting height for the time of year
- A lawn that stays neat without paying for visits it does not need
