Brown Is Not Always Dead
Every dry season we get the same worried calls: “My lawn has gone brown — is it dead?” Almost always, no. Carpet grass (Axonopus compressus), the natural Ghana lawn, goes dormant in the dry season. It pulls back, turns straw-coloured, and waits. When the rains return it greens up again. Understanding that one fact saves a lot of panic and a lot of wasted money.
That said, dormant is not the same as neglected. A lawn can come through the dry season weak and patchy, or come through it ready to bounce back the moment the rains arrive. The difference is in how it is cared for during the hard months.
What the Dry Season Does to a Lawn
Less Water
Carpet grass wants roughly an inch of water a week to stay green. When the rains stop, it simply does not get that, so it browns and slows almost to a stop.
Harmattan Dust and Dry Wind
The dry, dusty Harmattan wind pulls moisture out of the soil and the grass faster. Lawns dry out quicker than people expect.
Hard, Compacted Soil
Dry soil bakes hard, and water — when it does come — runs off instead of soaking in. The lawn struggles to use what little it gets.
What Actually Helps
Water Deeply, Not Often
If you want the lawn green through the dry season, water it properly — a good soak that reaches the roots, less often, beats a light daily sprinkle that only wets the surface. Early morning is best, before the heat. A simple irrigation set-up makes this far easier.
Mow Higher and Less
In the dry season, cut the lawn a little higher and far less often. Longer blades shade the soil, hold moisture, and protect the crown. Scalping a dry-season lawn is one of the fastest ways to damage it.
Stay Off a Stressed Lawn
Heavy foot traffic on dry, brittle grass wears bare patches that are slow to recover. Ease up where you can.
Do Not Force-Feed It
Pushing lots of fertiliser onto a dormant, water-starved lawn does more harm than good. Feeding is for the growing season.
What Is Wasted Effort
Mowing a dormant lawn on a wet-season schedule, heavy fertilising, and constant light watering that never reaches the roots are all wasted — and on a fixed year-round contract, you would be paying for them.
