When the Lawn Tries to Get Away From You
The dry season slows a lawn almost to a stop. The rains do the opposite — carpet grass (Axonopus compressus) races. Two weeks of good rain and a neat lawn turns shaggy; a month of it and you have a meadow. The rainy season is when a lawn looks its best and is hardest to keep up with, and it is when a fixed two-week-or-less mowing rhythm earns its keep.
It is also when a few wet-season problems show up — soft ground, drainage, and a rush of weeds. None of them are serious if you stay ahead of them. All of them get worse if you let the lawn slide.
Keeping Up With the Growth
Mow More Often
This is the season to cut every one to two weeks, sometimes closer in a heavy spell. The mistake is letting it grow tall and then scalping it back in one go — that shocks the grass and leaves it patchy. Little and often beats a big rescue cut.
Do Not Cut a Soaking-Wet Lawn Too Low
Mowing in the rains has its own rhythm. Cutting a waterlogged lawn very short tears more than it cuts and compacts soft ground. The right height and timing matter more in the wet.
Keep the Edges in Check
The rains push growth everywhere — along paths, drives, and beds. Edging and strimming keep the whole lawn looking maintained, not just the middle.
The Wet-Season Problems to Watch
Drainage and Standing Water
Heavy Accra downpours find every low spot. Water that sits on a lawn for long drowns the roots and leaves yellow, dying patches. If your lawn pools after rain, that is a levelling or drainage issue worth fixing rather than living with.
Weeds Love the Wet
Weeds germinate fast in warm, wet conditions — the same conditions your grass loves. A dense, well-fed lawn out-competes most of them, but the rains are when weed patches spread quickest, so staying on top of weeding matters more now. Keeping the lawn dense and the beds tidy through garden maintenance is the best defence.
Soft Ground and Ruts
Wet ground marks easily under foot traffic and heavy mowers. Easing off where the ground is softest avoids ruts that take months to recover.
